Description

the Type 97 Hokkaido was a Japanese 8x8 Armored car based on the Sd.Kfz. 231 8-Rad of the German Army (However it was a smaller vehicle and quite different in certain areas, which in turn made it so that they did not need a Licence from the Germans to produce them) Even though there were many variants and a production run that lasted from 1938 to 1945 they only made about 63, (some reports list the production run as over 120, however this is doubtful) and even though these were superior in a lot of ways to the other armored cars that japan had, only 4 confirmed ever left the home islands (3 spotted in China and 1 in Manchuria).

Interesting Facts: the tires were actually interchangeable with the very common Type 94 6x6 truck, and The hull mounted Type 97 was actually unique in that its magazine and action was flipped (spent casings flew out the top and the magazine attached from the bottom) however this frequently caused problems, later prompting them to use the outdated Model 91 machine-gun for a while and then finally removing the hull machine-gun position altogether in favor of more ammo storage
